Emotional Release Technique: Releasing Stored Emotions Through Muscle Testing
A Gentle Approach to Exploring and Releasing Emotional Patterns
Have you ever experienced something emotionally difficult and felt like your body continued to carry it long after the event was over? Sometimes we can understand something intellectually and still feel as though we're holding onto it physically or emotionally.
Emotional Release Technique is a complementary energy-based approach designed to help identify and release emotions that may be contributing to patterns of emotional or physical stress.
At North Texas Healing Center, we use muscle testing, focused questioning, and a magnet-based technique to identify emotions that may be ready to be released and facilitate the release process. The goal isn't to make you relive a difficult experience. Instead, the process is designed to gently explore what your body may be holding onto and help you move forward.
What Is Emotional Release Technique?
Emotional Release Technique is a form of complementary energy work based on the idea that emotional experiences can leave energetic patterns or imbalances in the body.
When we experience emotions such as fear, anger, grief, frustration, or sadness, we experience more than a thought.
We may also experience physical changes:
-
Muscle tension
-
Changes in breathing
-
A racing heart
-
A feeling in the stomach
-
Tightness in the chest
-
Changes in posture
-
An urge to move, cry, withdraw, or react
These physical responses are a normal part of the body's response to emotion.
Emotional Release Technique takes a different approach to exploring these mind-body connections. Rather than focusing solely on consciously remembering or talking through an experience, the practitioner uses muscle testing to identify emotions that may be ready to be addressed.
How Does Emotional Release Technique Work?
A typical session involves three basic steps:
1. Identify
Muscle testing is used to ask a series of structured questions and narrow down the emotional pattern being explored.
The process may help identify:
-
A particular emotion
-
Whether the emotion is ready to be addressed
-
Where the practitioner should focus
-
Other information relevant to the session
The muscle-testing process is used as a form of energetic or biofeedback assessment within this practice. It is not a medical diagnostic test.
2. Locate
Once an emotion has been identified, the practitioner may use muscle testing to determine where the emotional pattern is being experienced or held within the body.
This doesn't necessarily mean that an emotion is physically stored in a particular organ, muscle, or tissue in the same way that a substance would be stored.
Rather, "stored" or "trapped" emotions are terms used within energy healing to describe an emotional pattern that may continue to influence how a person experiences their body, emotions, or responses.
3. Release
Once the emotion has been identified, a magnet is used as part of the release technique.
The practitioner uses the magnet along a specific pathway on the body while holding the intention of releasing the identified emotional energy. Within the framework of this practice, the magnet is believed to help facilitate the release of the energetic pattern associated with the emotion.
The process is gentle and non-invasive.
Why Use a Magnet?
One of the most distinctive parts of Emotional Release Technique is the use of a magnet during the release process. The magnet is not being used to physically pull an emotion out of the body.
Instead, within the energy-healing framework, the magnet is used as a tool to help direct or facilitate the energetic release. This is similar to the way other energy-based practices use specific tools, touch, intention, or energetic techniques to support the process. Our use of the magnet is part of the complementary energy-healing approach used during the session.
Do I Have to Relive the Experience?
No.
One of the reasons people are drawn to this type of work is that they may be able to explore an emotional pattern without having to tell the entire story or repeatedly relive the original experience.
You may know what the experience was, or you may not.
You don't necessarily have to provide every detail.
The practitioner uses muscle testing and structured questions to guide the session rather than requiring you to consciously identify every emotion yourself.
For some people, this creates a gentler way to explore emotional experiences that may feel difficult to revisit.
What Types of Emotions Can Be Explored?
Emotional Release Technique may be used to explore a wide range of emotional experiences, including:
-
Fear
-
Anger
-
Sadness
-
Grief
-
Frustration
-
Resentment
-
Disappointment
-
Guilt
-
Shame
-
Anxiety
-
Feeling overwhelmed
-
Emotional hurt
-
Other emotional patterns identified during the session
The purpose isn't to label an emotion as "good" or "bad." Instead, the goal is to explore whether an emotional pattern may still feel unresolved, relevant to you and your health goals, and whether you're ready to release it.
Who May Benefit from Emotional Release Technique?
This type of complementary energy work may appeal to people who:
-
Feel like they're carrying emotional experiences from the past
-
Notice recurring emotional patterns
-
Feel emotionally "stuck"
-
Experience stress that seems difficult to explain
-
Want to explore the emotional side of their overall wellness
-
Prefer a gentle, non-invasive approach
-
Are interested in energy healing
-
Want to explore emotions without extensively revisiting the details of the original experience
You don't have to be experiencing a major emotional crisis to explore this type of work. Some people simply want to better understand themselves and create space for emotional growth.
What Can I Expect During an Emotional Release Session?
Your session begins with a conversation about what you're experiencing and what you'd like to explore. You can share as much or as little as you’d like.
Your practitioner will then use muscle testing and focused questions to guide the session.
You may be asked simple questions that can be answered through the muscle-testing process.
Once an emotion has been identified, your practitioner will guide the release process using the magnet and the techniques associated with Emotional Release.
You can and should remain fully clothed throughout the session.
The process is generally incredibly gentle and does not require physical manipulation.
Some people report feeling relaxed, lighter, calmer, or emotionally different following a session while others have reported feeling heavy, having a burst of emotion (crying, anger, etc.), or feeling withdrawn followed by the feelings of relaxation and calming energy previously mentioned. Experiences vary, and there is no particular response you are expected to have.
Can Emotional Release Technique Be Done Remotely?
Yes.
Emotional Release Technique can also be incorporated into remote/telehealth energy healing sessions.
When working remotely, muscle testing may be performed using a proxy, allowing the practitioner to work with a client who is not physically present in the office.
This means you will be able to receive care from your home, another state, or even another country.
The same principles of energetic connection and intention used in other muscle testing by proxy sessions can be incorporated into the emotional release process.
Is Emotional Release Technique the Same as Mental Health Therapy?
No.
This distinction is important. Emotional Release Technique is a complementary energy-healing practice. It is not psychotherapy, counseling, psychiatric treatment, or medical treatment for mental health conditions.
If you're experiencing significant anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, suicidal thoughts, or another mental health concern, you should work with an appropriately qualified mental health professional.
Energy healing can be used as a complementary wellness practice, but it should not replace appropriate mental health care.
Is Emotional Release Technique Safe?
The technique is non-invasive and does not involve medication, needles, or physical manipulation.
However, emotional experiences can sometimes be sensitive or unexpectedly intense.
If you have a history of significant trauma or are currently experiencing serious emotional or mental health symptoms, we recommend working with an appropriately qualified mental health professional and discussing whether complementary energy work is appropriate for you.
Emotional Release Technique should not be used as a reason to postpone or replace appropriate medical or mental health care. This is consistent with general guidance for complementary health approaches.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an emotion "stored in the body"?
In Emotional Release Technique, "stored" or "trapped" emotions describe emotional patterns that may continue to influence a person's energetic and physical experience. It does not mean that an emotion has been physically stored inside a particular organ or muscle like a substance but rather manifesting in an energetic way.
Does the magnet pull the emotion out?
No. The magnet is not physically pulling an emotion from the body; it is pulling energy away from the body. It is used as part of the energetic release technique and is to help facilitate the release of the identified emotional pattern.
Do I have to remember what happened?
Not necessarily. The process can be guided through muscle testing and structured questions, so you don't have to consciously identify or explain every detail of an experience.
Will I have to talk about traumatic experiences?
Not necessarily. The intention of the technique is not to require you to repeatedly relive or describe difficult experiences. However, emotional responses can sometimes arise during any type of emotional wellness work. You should always communicate with your practitioner about what feels comfortable for you.
How many sessions will I need?
There isn't a universal number of sessions that apply to everyone. The number and frequency of sessions depend on your goals, your individual experience, and what you and your practitioner determine is appropriate.
Can Emotional Release Technique be done remotely?
Yes. Remote sessions can incorporate muscle testing by proxy, allowing you to participate without being physically present in the office.
Can Emotional Release Technique replace therapy?
No. It is a complementary wellness practice and should not replace psychotherapy, psychiatric care, or other appropriate mental health treatment.
